Tenby

Tenby

Tenby is a walled seaside town with an array of sandy beaches, a picturesque harbour, and lots of history. It’s Welsh name Dynbych Y Pysgod means ‘town of the little fishes’ and has been a popular tourist destination for a long time.

There are four beaches in Tenby, North Beach, Harbour Beach, Castle Beach and South Beach. North Beach overlooks the harbour where you can watch the Caldey boats coming in and out when it’s high tide, the harbour beach is a very small beach and right by the pier, Castle Beach sits under Castle Hill where you can see St Catherine’s Island and South Beach has the best views of Caldey Island and is a mile and a half long. St Catherine’s Island is a tidal island on the foot of Castle Beach, the fort once housed a small zoo.

Cobblestones line the streets of Tenby where you’ll find local shops big and small. Jago is an independent fashion and lifestyle store run by husband and wife, there’s men’s and womenswear as well as children’s toys and homeware. Outer Reef Tenby is a surf and paddleboarding shop which sells surf apparel and offers equipment hire – everything you could possibly need for a day on the waves! Equinox Tenby is a vibrant, quirky store selling candles, incense, oil burners and more. The Nook offers a communal space for local artists to showcase their work, from paintings to pottery it is a handmade dream tucked away down towards the harbour. Tenby Bookshop is a traditional bookshop which also sells traditional toys, contemporary gifts, and homeware. Ruby Ruby is a beauty shop offering manicures, pedicures, eyebrows and much more - the perfect place for a little pamper. Nate's Barbers is a local shop selling clothing at the front and offering haircuts at the back. Puffin Cottage Holiday's very own Morgan works there too so pop in and say hello!

The walled town holds lots of history, the town walls itself are grade 1 listed and are thought to be as one of the most important surviving medieval city walls in Britain. Situated on Castle Hill you’ll find the ancient castle ruins with one of the towers still standing. Step back in time to the 15th century at Tudor Merchant’s House, the National Trust have preserved this house for visitors to really experience what life was like during the Tudor times. A great way to experience storytelling about the history is by attending one of the guided ghost walks. Tenby Museum and Art Gallery is the oldest independent museum in Wales, it has displays showcasing the history of the town giving a sense of place and heritage to both the locals and the visitors.

Tenby town centre has many places to eat and drink. The Fuchsia Café is a quirky little café tucked away in the mews quarter, next door is Tap and Tan which has delicious live fire cookery and craft beer. The Dennis Café is situated right on Castle Beach so perfect for lunch whilst on a day out to the beach, Billycan Tenby is within the castle walls offering yummy food and a relaxed atmosphere. Ronni’z Lounge is new to Tenby serving cocktails and brunch. On George's offers delicious dining, Westgate House is a great stop for cocktails and small plates and Plantagenet House is the top spot for Sunday lunch! For an authentic Italian restaurant head to Il Caminetto.

Tenby is home to both sporting events Ironman Wales and Long Course Weekend which entails a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and a 26.2 mile run. Long Course Weekend is set over three days with the swim on the Friday, cycle on the Saturday and finishes with the run on the Sunday, this year it takes place on the weekend of 30th June 2023. Ironman Wales is completed over one day, 3rd September 2023 (this changes every year depending on the tide times), it’s been voted the best Ironman in the world to take part in and we’re not surprised with the breath-taking views around Pembrokeshire and the immense support of the spectators, it’s something everyone looks forward to year after year whether you’re competing or not!
