Amroth is located on the south coast of Pembrokeshire seven miles east of Tenby and at the start (or end, depending on the direction your walking) of the world renowned 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

Amroth is a popular destination for families, however, it still manages to remain quiet compared to its seaside neighbours of Tenby and Saundersfoot.

Amroth is a Welsh name meaning ‘on the brook called Rhath’. It has a half mile long, flat, sandy beach. There’s a huge expanse of sand at low tide for all sorts of beach games and rockpools to explore at the western end. There are groynes at the top of the beach that help protect the village from storms and provide great shelter for families on beach days. It’s a great place for sandcastle building and beach games. You could even try the new craze, rock stacking using the pebbles on the beach.

During the 19th century, Amroth was an important anthracite coal mining area, with the coal being shipped out to Bristol and beyond.

Ironstone and stone quarrying have also featured in Amroth’s past so too has fishing with the local catch of salmon, cod and flatfish being taken to Tenby market for sale.

Most of the local shops are situated opposite the beach, and there are also several restaurants, cafes and public houses nearby.

Activities

Amroth has a wide, south facing, sandy beach making it ideal for windsurfing, swimming and family beach games. The beach is also very popular for canoeing and kayaking, especially as it’s so easy to carry any equipment down the slipway into the water.

Attractions

Nearby is the National Trust’s Colby Woodland Gardens, this 900-acre estate features a mixture of woodland paths through a colourful background which was once an 18th-century coalfield.

Colby Woodland Gardens are a must for visitors, particularly during spring and autumn, it boasts one of the best collections of rhododendrons and azaleas in Wales, with bluebells and daffodils in spring, hydrangeas in summer and wonderful colours in the autumn. The Gardens are open from April to November.

Food & Drink

At the east end of the village, behind the beach is a pub, The New Inn, a 16th Century family-run public house serving homemade food including local fresh fish.

The main village is at the west end of the beach where you can find The Amroth Arms with a wonderful beer garden over the road on the beachfront, and the Temple Bar Inn which is dog friendly with a large patio area facing the beach.

Next door is the Smugglers Bar & Grill which serves delicious home-cooked and locally sourced meals, with a pirate-themed children's play area, making it the perfect for families.

You can also find The Pirate Café and gift shop, serving light lunches and coffees, next door is an ice cream parlour with a wide selection of flavours as well as doggie ice cream. Explore the shop for all your families’ gifts and all the tools you’ll need for building sandcastle on the beach.

At Colby Woodland Garden you’ll find the Bothy Tea Room with a vast selection of homemade cakes, delicious-filled rolls, clotted cream scones and much more.

Walks and wanders around Amroth

Walking is a popular activity in the area, Amroth marks the southern start of the Pembrokeshire Coast path and as an alternative to the coastal path, if you time it right and get a very low tide, you can walk along the sand all the way to Saundersfoot, about 3 miles. Passing the neighbouring coastal villages of Wisemans Bridge and Coppet Hall Beach on the way.

Amroth to Colby Woodland Gardens is a loop for all abilities the route starts off going steadily uphill, the rest of the walk is on paths which rise and fall more gently.
