Dog-friendly Beaches in Pembrokeshire

Here in Pembrokeshire, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful beaches! From the traditional seaside charm of Saundersfoot and Tenby to the sweeping golden sands of Marloes Sands and the secluded beauty of Barafundle Bay, there’s a beach to suit everyone – including your four-legged friends!

With more than 50 beaches and 186 miles of spectacular coastal path to explore, Pembrokeshire is the perfect destination for a holiday with your pooch. Whether they love splashing in the sea, chasing a ball across the sand or enjoying a leisurely coastal walk, there are plenty of places to make wonderful holiday memories together.

The good news is that most of Pembrokeshire’s beaches welcome dogs all year round! However, some of our most popular beaches have seasonal dog restrictions between 1st May and 30th September. These restrictions are lifted from 1st October until 30th April, giving you even more freedom to explore our beautiful coastline with your four-legged companion.

Don’t worry if you’re visiting during the summer months, though! There are still plenty of fantastic dog-friendly beaches to discover, with some of our favourites listed below. Just remember to check local signs before visiting, as restrictions can apply to particular sections of a beach.

Saundersfoot Beach and Glen Beach

The charming seaside village of Saundersfoot is home to several lovely beaches, each offering something a little different.

The main beach sits alongside the picturesque harbour, with golden sand, cafés, independent shops and restaurants just moments away along The Strand. Nearby, Coppet Hall Beach is another beautiful sandy spot, with a coastal path and old tramway tunnels connecting it to Wiseman’s Bridge.

During the summer months, restrictions apply to parts of Saundersfoot Beach and Coppet Hall, so be sure to check the signs to find out where your dog can join you.

For a beach where dogs are welcome throughout the year, head to Glen Beach, tucked away on the northern side of Saundersfoot Harbour. Backed by low cliffs, this quieter spot has lovely sandy stretches and plenty of rock pools to explore when the tide goes out. If you fancy a longer walk, you can follow the coastline towards Monkstone when the tide and conditions allow.

Wiseman’s Bridge

Just a short distance from Saundersfoot, Wiseman’s Bridge is a favourite with dog walkers and coastal explorers. This pretty spot has a mix of sand, pebbles, rocks and rock pools, making it an interesting place for curious pooches to investigate.

Dogs are welcome here all year round, making it an excellent choice for a summer beach walk.

You can explore the shoreline at low tide or follow the old tramway route through the tunnels connecting Wiseman’s Bridge with Coppet Hall and Saundersfoot. When the tide is sufficiently low, you may also be able to walk towards Amroth but always check the tide times and local restrictions before setting off.

After your walk, the Wiseman’s Bridge Inn makes a lovely place to stop for a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.

Amroth Beach

If your dog loves a good run along the sand, Amroth Beach is well worth a visit. At low tide, a long, flat stretch of sandy beach is revealed beyond the pebble bank, offering plenty of space for a leisurely stroll or a game of fetch.

The village sits right beside the beach, making it easy to combine your walk with a stop for refreshments.

Amroth has seasonal dog restrictions between 1st May and 30th September, covering designated areas of the beach and promenade. Outside this period, you can enjoy even more of the shoreline with your four-legged friend.

If you’re visiting in summer, check the local signs so you know exactly which areas are open to dogs.

Tenby’s South Beach

No visit to Pembrokeshire would be complete without a trip to Tenby, and its beautiful South Beach is a wonderful place to enjoy the scenery with your dog.

Stretching for around a mile and a half at low tide, South Beach boasts golden sands, rolling dunes and gorgeous views across the water towards Caldey Island. It’s ideal for a long walk, with access to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path at the Penally end for those who fancy exploring further.

During the summer months, dogs are restricted from designated sections of South Beach, but they can still enjoy permitted areas towards Giltar Point. Tenby’s Castle Beach and North Beach also have their own restrictions, with a full seasonal dog ban on North Beach.

Once the seasonal restrictions end on 30th September, you and your pooch can enjoy even more of Tenby’s wonderful beaches.

Monkstone Beach

For those looking to escape the crowds, Monkstone Beach is a hidden gem between Saundersfoot and Tenby.

This secluded sandy cove is only accessed at the moment by climbing over the rocks from the Glen Beach, a peaceful stretch of sand and plenty of opportunities to explore.

Monkstone welcomes dogs all year round, making it a lovely option whatever the season.

Take care when visiting, as access to the beach can become cut off by the incoming tide. Check tide times before setting off and take care on the rocky sections.

Freshwater West

A little further west, near Pembroke, you’ll find the spectacular Freshwater West. With its wide stretch of sand and impressive dunes, it’s a favourite with surfers, walkers and dogs who love plenty of space to explore.

Freshwater West is also a must-visit for Harry Potter fans, as the beach is associated with Dobby’s grave in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Its dramatic scenery has featured in several other film productions, too.

Best of all, dogs are welcome on Freshwater West throughout the year, with no seasonal beach dog restrictions. It’s a fantastic choice if you’re visiting during the summer months and want somewhere to enjoy a proper sandy beach walk.

The beach can be exposed to strong winds and powerful waves, so keep an eye on sea conditions and take care around the water.

Manorbier Bay

Situated in the pretty village of Manorbier, this beautiful sandy bay is overlooked by the impressive Manorbier Castle.

Popular with surfers and paddleboarders when conditions are right, Manorbier is also a lovely spot for a walk with your dog. With spectacular coastal views and access to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, it’s well worth making time to explore beyond the beach.

Dogs are welcome throughout the year, making Manorbier a great option for summer visitors.

There’s a National Park car park nearby, and the surrounding coastal paths provide plenty of opportunities to admire Pembrokeshire’s breathtaking scenery. Keep your dog under control near cliff edges and livestock and take care on uneven paths.

Freshwater East

Just outside the village of Lamphey, Freshwater East is a wide, sandy beach backed by dunes and the local nature reserve known as The Burrows.

It’s an excellent choice for a peaceful walk, a picnic or simply watching your dog enjoy the shoreline. With plenty of space and beautiful natural surroundings, Freshwater East is another lovely beach to add to your holiday itinerary.

Dogs are welcome throughout the year, so you can enjoy a visit even during the summer restriction period.

If you have time, explore the surrounding paths and dunes, remembering to respect the local wildlife and keep your dog under control where needed.

Coppet Hall Beach

Coppet Hall is a beautiful sandy beach close to Saundersfoot, with wide, flat sands at low tide and rocky areas perfect for exploring rock pools.

It’s connected to Saundersfoot and Wiseman’s Bridge by the old tramway tunnels and coastal paths, making it a great starting point for a longer walk.

There are seasonal dog restrictions here between 1st May and 30th September. The northern section, in front of the Beach Centre, has a voluntary request for dogs to stay away between 10am and 6pm, while dogs are welcome in other permitted areas.

Check the local signs before your visit and remember that dogs must be kept on a lead in designated areas, including the promenade and car parks during the summer restriction period.

Barafundle Bay

Often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Barafundle Bay is a must-see for anyone exploring Pembrokeshire.

This secluded sandy beach is reached on foot from Stackpole Quay, with a walk of around half a mile along the clifftops. The journey is every bit as memorable as the destination, with breathtaking coastal views before you descend the steps to the sheltered bay.

Barafundle is dog-friendly all year round, making it a wonderful destination for a coastal adventure with your four-legged friend.

Bear in mind that the walk includes slopes, steps and uneven ground, so it may not suit every visitor or dog. Keep your dog on a lead along the clifftop paths, take care near the edges and remember to pack everything you need, as there are no facilities directly on the beach.
